ஆவணி அவிட்டம்

Avani Avittam (ஆவணி அவிட்டம்) is Upakarma — the annual changing of the poonal (yajnopavitam) by men who wear it. It is not all Tamil. It is Iyer and Iyengar, and a few other Vedic households. That line is the practice. Most Tamil Brahmins are Yajurvedins; this calendar uses the Yajurveda date. Rigveda and Samaveda Upakarma fall on different days the same season — 26 August and 12 September in 2026. Follow the Veda of the household; do not flatten the three into one. The day includes kamokarsheet japam (confession of the year's lapses), a new poonal, and tarpanam. The next morning is Gayatri japam. Iyengar krama seats Perumal; Iyer/Smarta follows the vathiyar. In 2026 the Yajurveda date is Thursday, 27 August. Gayatri japam is Friday, 28 August.

Observances

1. Changing the poonal

   The old thread is replaced after kamokarsheet japam. A vathiyar or an elder of the house ties the new one.

   If no vathiyar is in town, join a temple Upakarma or a Zoom from a known priest. Do not invent the mantras. The new thread can be mailed from Giri or a Tamil store.

2. Gayatri japam the next morning

   The day after Upakarma is Gayatri japam — a counted recitation, often 1008, done before food.

   Count with a mala. Children who do not wear the thread can sit and listen; they do not fake the japam.

In the US

US Iyer and Iyengar sabhas and the larger Venkateswara / Shiva-Vishnu temples run a group Upakarma on the Yajurveda morning. New poonals ship from Giri USA. If the Thursday is a workday, men often take a half-day or do the rite at dawn. Name the Veda. Do not attend a Rigveda session and call it done if the house is Yajurveda.
