நவராத்திரி / கொலு
September-October · 9 days
Tamil Navaratri is nine nights for the goddess — three each for Durga (warrior), Lakshmi (prosperity), and Saraswati (learning). It falls in the bright half of Ashwin (September-October), the same astronomical window as Gujarati Navratri, but Tamil practice looks nothing like garba. The center of the festival is Bommai Kolu — the household's tiered doll display, set up on the first day and revealed to visitors each evening. Friends and neighbors visit each home's Golu through the nine evenings, sing devotional songs, drink coffee, accept a small thamboolam (a gift of betel leaves, kumkum, and a token blouse-piece), and try a different sundal (lightly spiced legume) each night. Day nine is Saraswati Puja; day ten, Vijayadashami, is the day children formally begin their learning — Vidyarambham.
What to do
Setting up Bommai Kolu
EssentialDolls arranged on an odd number of steps (3, 5, 7, 9, or 11), set up on the first day. Deities on top, saints and historical figures in the middle, village scenes and the household marapachi dolls at the base.
Sundal neivedyam (nine nights of legumes)
Each of the nine evenings, a different sundal — lightly spiced boiled legumes — is prepared, offered first to the Golu deities, then distributed to visitors. Chickpea, black-eyed pea, peanut, mung dal, brown chana, cowpea, dried green peas, split yellow peas, and chickpea-with-coconut are common rotations.
Golu visits and thamboolam
Friends, neighbors, and family visit each other's Golu through the nine evenings. Visitors sing a devotional song, drink filter coffee or buttermilk, and leave with a thamboolam — a small gift of betel leaves, betel nut, kumkum, a fruit, and (for older married women) a small blouse-piece.
Saraswati Puja
EssentialOn the ninth night, books, instruments, and the tools of one's profession are placed at the altar to be blessed by Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music, and arts. The puja closes with a lengthy reading of Saraswati stotras.
Vijayadashami and Vidyarambham
EssentialOn the tenth morning, the books and instruments left at the altar overnight are reverently retrieved with a short puja. Children formally beginning their education (Vidyarambham) are guided by an elder to write their first letters in a tray of rice.

In the diaspora
Tamil Navaratri travels with the dolls — most Tamil households in the US have a Golu collection built over years, often passed down from a mother or grandmother and added to each year from trips back. New dolls come from Giri USA, Srishti USA, Tamil online stores, or hand-carried in suitcases. Apartment-dwellers use compact 3- or 5-step displays built from cardboard boxes covered in cloth; larger homes go up to 9 or 11. Tamil Sangam chapters in most major US cities organize Golu visits, song-singing evenings, and competition judging. Saraswati Puja and Vijayadashami at home are typically marked by placing the family's books, laptops, and instruments at the altar; Vidyarambham for the youngest child often happens at the local Tamil temple.
