Bandi Chhor Divas marks the release of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind, from imprisonment at Gwalior Fort, alongside 52 imprisoned kings he secured freedom for. Falling on Diwali, it is celebrated at the Golden Temple with spectacular illumination. Punjabi Hindus observe Diwali in its broader sense; for Sikhs the day carries this distinct meaning of freedom and justice.
What to do
Deepmala (illumination)
Lighting of gurdwaras and homes; the Golden Temple is famously lit.
Kirtan and fireworks
Evening diwan followed by fireworks.
In the diaspora
Gurdwaras host deepmala and fireworks where permitted; many Punjabi families celebrate both the Sikh meaning and the wider Diwali festivities with extended family across faiths.
