Aadi / Aadi Maadham

ஆடி

Mid-July to mid-August (Tamil solar month) · 31 days

Aadi is the fourth month of the Tamil solar calendar, beginning when the sun enters Karka (Cancer) around July 16–17. Because it is reckoned by the sun rather than the moon, its Gregorian dates are stable year to year, unlike the lunar Shravan. Aadi is the great month of the Amman — the mother goddess — and is dominated by goddess worship: Aadi Velli (Fridays) and Aadi Sevvai (Tuesdays) are kept for Amman, and the month holds Aadi Perukku on the 18th, Aadi Pooram, Aadi Amavasai for ancestor rites, and Aadi Krittikai. By convention Aadi is treated as inauspicious for weddings and major new ventures, even as it is among the most auspicious months for the goddess. In everyday Tamil life it is also the famous Aadi thallupadi discount-sale season.

What to do

Aadi Velli (Fridays)

Fridays of Aadi kept for Amman worship — temple visits, special pujas, and offerings to the goddess.

Aadi Perukku

Observed on the 18th of Aadi to honour rivers and water at their monsoon peak.

Aadi Amavasai

The new-moon day of Aadi, kept for tarpanam (rites for ancestors).

In the diaspora

US Tamil temples — the Amman and Murugan temples across the Bay Area, Houston, Atlanta, and the New York–New Jersey corridor — hold special Aadi Velli abhishekams and Amman pujas through the month, and Tamil families keep the Friday goddess observances at home even when they cannot reach a temple.
