Sawan / Saawan
ਸਾਵਣ
July–August (Purnimanta Sawan) · 30 days
Sawan is the monsoon month and, in North Indian reckoning, the fifth month of the Hindu lunar year. Punjab follows the Purnimanta system, in which Sawan begins the day after Ashadha Purnima — roughly a fortnight earlier than the Amanta Shravan kept in Gujarat and the south — and ends on Shravan Purnima. Beyond its religious weight (Sawan Somvar fasts for Shiva among Punjabi Hindus), Sawan is one of the most beloved months in Punjabi folk culture: the arrival of the rains, peengh (swings) hung from trees, Teej and Teeyan gatherings of women, and a whole genre of Sawan folk songs celebrating the season and the longing of separated lovers.
What to do
Sawan Somvar
Mondays of Sawan kept as fasting days for Shiva by many Punjabi Hindu families.
Teeyan and peengh
Women gather for gidda, boliyan, and swinging on decorated peengh (swings) through the monsoon month, peaking at Teej.
Sawan folk songs
Seasonal songs marking the rains and the longing of the season are sung through the month.
In the diaspora
Punjabi cultural associations and Sikh women's groups in the US host Teeyan melas and gidda events during the Sawan monsoon window in late July and August, and Punjabi Hindu families keep Sawan Somvar fasts and visit local Shiva temples.
