Lohri
ਲੋਹੜੀ
January (13) · 1 day
Lohri celebrates the passing of the winter solstice and the winter harvest. Families gather around a bonfire, offering sesame (til), jaggery (gur), popcorn, and peanuts to the flames while singing folk songs, notably the ballad of Dulla Bhatti. It is a shared cultural and seasonal festival across Punjabi Sikh and Hindu households, especially celebrated for newlyweds and newborns.
What to do
Bonfire and offerings
Throwing til, gur, and rewri into the fire while circling it.
Dulla Bhatti songs
Singing 'Sunder mundriye' and the legend of Dulla Bhatti.
In the diaspora
Often celebrated indoors or at community halls and gurdwaras given winter weather; families with a new baby or marriage in the year frequently host. Backyard fire pits stand in for the traditional bonfire.
