Shravan Maas / Shravani Mahina
શ્રાવણ માસ
July–September (Amanta Shravan) · 30 days
Shravan is the holiest month of the Hindu lunar year and the month most dedicated to Shiva. Gujarat follows the Amanta reckoning, in which Shravan begins the day after Ashadha Amavasya (the new moon) and ends at the next new moon. The month is defined by Shravan Somvar — the Mondays kept as fasting days for Shiva — along with Mangala Gauri vrat on Tuesdays for married women. Several major festivals fall within or at the edge of the month, including Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan on Shravan Purnima, and Janmashtami near its close. For many Gujarati Hindu, Swaminarayan, and Pushtimarg families it is a period of lighter, often onion-and-garlic-free eating, extra temple visits, and Shivling abhishekam.
What to do
Shravan Somvar
The Mondays of Shravan, kept as fasting days dedicated to Shiva, often with a Shivling abhishekam of water, milk, and bilva leaves.
Mangala Gauri Vrat
A Tuesday fast observed by married women for the wellbeing of the family, dedicated to Gauri (Parvati).
Lighter sattvic eating
Many families keep a lighter, often onion- and garlic-free diet through the month and increase temple visits.
In the diaspora
US Gujarati temples — BAPS and Swaminarayan mandirs, Pushtimarg havelis, and neighbourhood Shiva temples — hold weekly Shravan Somvar programs and Rudrabhishek through the month. Many diaspora families mark the Mondays with a simple home fast and take children to a Monday-evening aarti, and time Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami gatherings to the month.
