Navratri
નવરાત્રી
September-October · 9 days
Navratri is nine nights for Shakti — the divine feminine in her three forms of Durga (warrior), Lakshmi (prosperity), and Saraswati (learning). For Gujaratis it is the year's biggest cultural event, and one that distinguishes the community more than any other festival: nine nights of garba and dandiya raas, danced in concentric circles around the garbo (a clay pot lit with a single lamp, representing the goddess), with women in chaniya choli and men in kediyu. It falls in the bright half of Ashwin (September-October). The dancing peaks on Ashtami (day 8) and Navami (day 9), and closes on Vijayadashami — the tenth day — with the symbolic burning of effigies of Ravana and the end of the goddess sequence with Saraswati Puja.

In the diaspora
Gujarati Navratri is the community's most visible American cultural export. The largest US events — Edison NJ, Houston, Atlanta, Bay Area — are now multi-million-dollar ticketed productions ($25-$150) at convention centers, with celebrity playback singers flown in from India (Falguni Pathak's tour is the festival's most-watched), professional sound design, vendor bazaars, and Gujarati and Punjabi food courts. Smaller temple-based events (BAPS, ISSO, Gujarati Samaj chapters in every metro) maintain the traditional scale — devotional garba, garbo at the center, aarti before dancing begins. Chaniya choli stalls open at Patel Brothers and Indian malls a month in advance; Indian-American teenagers buy outfits each year and post them in detail across Instagram.
