Mahashivratri
મહાશિવરાત્રિ
February–March · 1 day
Mahashivratri — "the great night of Shiva" — falls on the moonless night of Phalgun krishna chaturdashi, in late February or early March. Unlike most Hindu festivals, which are celebrated through the day, Mahashivratri belongs entirely to the night. Shaivite Gujarati families fast all day, then spend the night in worship — at home or at the temple — pouring milk, water, and panchamrita over a Shiva lingam, offering bilva leaves (the three-lobed leaf sacred to Shiva), and chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" through the four watches of the night. The story Gujaratis tell is that this is the night Shiva and Parvati married; another tradition says it's the night Shiva performed the Tandava cosmic dance. Even families with no strong Shaivite identity observe it — Shiva belongs to everyone.
What to do
Daylong fast
EssentialMost observant Gujarati families fast the entire day and through the night, breaking the fast the next morning with a simple meal. Fruit, dairy, and 'vrat' foods (sabudana, kuttu, water chestnut flour) are permitted; cooked grains, onion, and garlic are not.
Shiva puja with bilva leaves
EssentialOffering bilva (bel) leaves to a Shiva lingam is the central act of Mahashivratri. The three-lobed leaf represents Shiva's three aspects. At home, a small lingam or Shiva image is bathed with water, milk, or panchamrita and offered bilva, white flowers, and a diya.
Four prahar jalabhishek
Through the night, the puja is repeated at each of the four prahars (three-hour watches). Temples do this continuously; homes mark each transition with a fresh round of abhishek and a different chant.
All-night vigil (jaagran)
Staying awake through the night, singing bhajans or listening to Shiva katha, is considered the most meritorious form of Shivratri observance. Shiva is said to be especially present through the four watches.

In the diaspora
Mahashivratri is one of the busiest nights of the year at US Hindu temples. Shiva-prominent temples — BAPS Swaminarayan complexes, Sri Venkateswara Temple in Penn Hills, the Shiva-Vishnu temples in Livermore CA and Atlanta — hold continuous abhishekam programs from sundown through dawn, with the four traditional prahar pujas (three-hour intervals through the night). Bilva (bel) leaves are stocked at Patel Brothers and most Indian groceries through February. For families keeping the fast at home, sabudana khichdi, kuttu (buckwheat) puris, fruit, and dairy are the standard during-fast menu. The next morning's first food — paaran — is usually a simple sweet (kheer) and parantha after a morning bath.
