Holi

હોળી

March · 2 days

Holi falls on Phalgun purnima — the full moon at the tail end of winter. The festival comes in two acts. On the eve, Holika Dahan: a bonfire is lit at the temple or society square, recalling the demoness Holika burning while her nephew Prahlad — a child devotee of Vishnu — emerged untouched. Families circle the fire, toss in coconuts, and roast green chickpeas in the embers. The next morning is Dhuleti, the color day. Gujaratis specifically call the second day Dhuleti, not Holi, and treat it as a household festival — children chasing each other through the apartment block with gulal, families gathering over thandai and puran poli.

What to do

Holika Dahan

Essential

The bonfire on Holi eve. Communities gather around a tall pyre lit at sunset; families circle it, throw in coconuts and roasted chana, and sing Phaag songs late into the night.

Dhuleti (color play)

The color day. Gujaratis call the second day Dhuleti, not Holi — it's the household side of the festival: gulal, water, a long lunch, and an afternoon nap.

Phagotsav (Pushtimarg)

The week before Holi, Pushtimarg havelis hold Phagotsav — Krishna and Radha placed on a swing and showered with abir-gulal, accompanied by Phaag pads sung in Braj Bhasha.

In the diaspora

Gujarati Holi in the US tends to live in two layers. The Festival of Colors events at parks and college campuses — ticketed, EDM-soundtracked — have made the festival mainstream, but they're a pan-Indian visual borrowing, not the Gujarati household practice. Most Gujarati families still keep Holika Dahan at the temple or society pavilion: open-flame bonfires are illegal in most US cities, so temples light a contained ceremonial fire or propane brazier instead. Dhuleti color play moves indoors, into backyards, or onto the temple lawn the following weekend. Natural gulal is sold at Patel Brothers and BAPS gift shops in the lead-up. Pushtimarg havelis in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Houston keep a smaller Phagotsav — one or two days of haveli seva rather than the Vrindavan-style week.
